Lithium Battery Disposal

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not regulate the disposal of batteries in small quantities. Lithium batteries are currently disposed of after their use, because manufacturers are not currently collecting them for recycling. While there are no federal regulations for disposal of lithium batteries, individual states or localities can/may establish their own guidelines for battery disposal.

Please follow any/all local, county, regional or state guidelines for the disposal of lithium batteries.

Batteries should be in a discharged condition prior to their disposal. Please tape over the contacts with electrical tape to prevent contacts from accidentally coming together in any way.

Does your recycling program cover only Eaton UPS systems and batteries?

No. We work with UPS systems and batteries from all manufacturers.

Can you provide specific shipping instructions?

If you must ship your UPS or battery to be recycled, here are some general guidelines.

1. If possible, ship the UPS system or battery using its original packaging.
2. If the original packaging is no longer available, have a FedEx or UPS professional package the product for you.
3. If you pack the UPS system or battery yourself, make sure that the unit is protected against damage during shipment. Select a sturdy, crush-resistant shipping container, such as a heavy-duty corrugated carton. Use plastic bubble wrap and crumpled newspaper to ensure a snug fit inside the box. The UPS is properly packaged if it does not move when the box is shaken. Do not use Styrofoam packing beads.
4. If shipping a UPS, make sure the internal batteries are secure inside the unit.
5. If shipping an external battery or battery pack, make sure the loose battery terminals are taped.

Do you have safety guidelines for handling UPS systems and batteries?

Yes. Do not open your UPS for any reason except for battery replacement via the battery access panel. Batteries can present a risk of electrical shock and burns from high short-circuit currents. Observe proper precautions. Do not dispose of the batteries in a fire. Do not short or bridge the battery terminals with any object. Unplug and turn off the UPS before performing battery replacement. Use tools with insulated handles.

Would it be cheaper to just replace one or two of the batteries if my UPS has several batteries in it?

No. Multiple batteries in a UPS normally age and lose capacity at the same rate. While it may cost less money to replace just one battery, for practical purposes, the UPS will operate only as well as its worst battery allows. A new battery's operation will be compromised by the old battery's depleted capacity.

I have an external battery also connected to my UPS, can I replace the internal batteries and keep the external battery pack connected.

No. If you need to replace the internal batteries, replace the external battery pack or disconnect it and recycle it. For practical purposes, the UPS will operate only as well as its worst battery in the UPS suite. A new internal battery cartridge will be compromised by the old external battery pack's depleted capacity.
