Overview

The U438-06N-G1-W USB 3.1 Gen 1 to SATA III Adapter Cable connects a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) to an available USB-C or Thunderbolt™ 3 port on your laptop, tablet, Chromebook or computer. This lets you back up important data, retrieve data from an old hard drive, or store information on an external drive that you can take with you to another computer.

This adapter cable supports USB 3.1 data transfer rates up to 5 Gbps. Its UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) feature reduces latency and allows the cable to perform up to 70% faster when connected to a UASP-enabled host controller.

Perfect for storing and sharing large files, such as music and video files, the U438-06N-G1-W is compatible with SATA drives up to 4 TB. Just insert the drive into the 22-pin SATA connector, and attach the built-in USB 3.1 cable to your computer.

The U438-06N-G1-W accepts SATA III (6 Gbps), SATA II (3 Gbps) and SATA I (1.5 Gbps) drives, as well as USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) and USB 1.1 (12 Mbps) transfer speeds. It supports LBA-48 bit (Logical Block Addressing) and USB Mass Storage Class Bulk-Only Transport. No software, drivers or external power supply is required. Compatible with all USB-enabled operating systems.

Questions & Answers

USB Type-C (or USB-C) is a new, smaller and very versatile connector with a reversible-plug that is capable of carrying data, video and power. USB Type-C is expected to eventually replace the USB Type-A and Type-B connectors currently in use. USB Type-C connectors are used in USB 2.0, USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1) and USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) applications.

Until recently, most USB cables have had a Type-A connector on one end and a Type-B connector on the other. A Type-A connector is typically connected to a desktop computer or laptop. Type-B connectors (standard, mini and micro versions) typically connect to a peripheral such as a printer, phone or camera. With a USB Type-C cable, both ends can be the same. Type-C can also support faster data transfer speeds and higher power output.

Combined with the new USB 3.1 Gen 2 standard (also called SuperSpeed+), USB Type-C can transfer data twice as fast as USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1), up to a maximum of 10 Gbs. It supports USB Power Delivery, a new protocol that allows significantly more power to be provided over USB, up to 100W. Not all USB Type-C cables and devices support USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.1 Gen 2, or USB Power Delivery, so make sure to check the specifications of your equipment to see what it supports.

Your device must have a USB Type-C port to accept a Type-C connector. Older USB devices can connect to a Type-C compatible phone, tablet, or laptop using an adapter cable (e.g. Type-C connector on one end and a Type-A or Type-B connector on the other). Some devices with USB Type-C ports still use the older USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1) standards. If you have a device with a USB Type-C port running USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps), you can still use older peripherals since USB 3.1 Gen 2 is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1), USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. Conversely, if you have a SuperSpeed+ peripheral with a Type-C connector, you can connect it to a Type A port running USB 3.0 (also described as USB 3.1 Gen 1), USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
